COACHING PHILOSOPHY

Although still a relatively new profession, many thousands of pages have been written by hundreds of authors on the subject of Coaching. The authorities that have influenced us most can be found under Resources, however the following summarises the presuppositions which underpin our work: -

We hold that our clients: -
  • seek purpose and meaning in their lives
  • desire a more satisfying life experience
  • want the best in their situations
  • are creative, resourceful and do not require fixing
  • are always part of a larger context of influence e.g. work, family etc
  • make assumptions which shape their world and behaviours

Personal change for our clients will: -

  • enhance their existing character
  • begin with the present and flow into the future
  • begin with themselves and flow outwards into their systems
  • be informed and influenced by feedback from their systems
  • occur when they shift limiting beliefs
  • reshape their sense of self as limiting beliefs are released
  • enable them to see themselves as distinct from their personalities
  • engage curiosity and expand ability to be with unanswered questions and uncertainty

Coaching focuses on: -

  • the client’s present and future
  • the past only in relationship to how it is affecting the present
  • giving constructive feedback to facilitate growth
  • creating experiential learning during the session
  • creating an emotional shift during the session
  • exploring opportunities to take the learning back into everyday life

The Coach will: -

  • maintain client confidentiality
  • remain open and curious
  • not judge what they are told during a session
  • encourage the full expression of emotions
  • use their personality as a tool for coaching
  • take learning from every coaching session given
  • approach learning as a lifetime adventure
  • receive coaching and supervision as part of their practise
  • continue their own personal development and training
