COACHING PROCESS
The coaching process is a designed alliance between the coach and individual client underpinned by our
Coaching Philosophy. The process will usually consist of the following elements: -
- A meeting with the sponsoring organisation to establish the coaching objectives
- A Design and Discovery session with the client to create a foundation for the coaching
- One-to-one coaching sessions
- Quarterly review / completion sessions
- Email support as required
Sponsor Meeting
Where an organisation is sponsoring the coaching, it is usual for the coach to meet with the client’s direct line manager to agree the objectives and review criteria for the coaching. This is less likely to occur for senior executive coaching where it is usually the individual client’s responsibility to manage the coaching process.
Design and Discovery Session
The alliance between the coach and the client is explored and agreed, including the frequency and pattern of the coaching sessions. For those new to coaching, the coaching process and concepts are explained during this session. The client may also be asked to complete a questionnaire prior to the session, the answers to which will be explored during the coaching. The purpose is to give structure to the client’s initial disclosures about themselves and to introduce the client to coaching style questions. The aim of the coach is to build rapport with the client and to establish the coaching objectives, so that the real work can begin during the next session.
One-to-One Coaching Sessions
Coaching may occur in any combination of sessions from a 30 minute telephone session per week, to a 6 hour session once a quarter, however most client choose 2 x 1 hour sessions per month. The coach will engage the client in reflective conversation, utilising powerful questions setting “homework” each week in the form of an enquiry, exercise or specific new action. The completion of homework is not compulsory, although it is important to be aware that the value from the coaching is created as much in between the sessions as during them. The more clients engage in the process, the more value they take from it.
Quarterly Review/Completion Sessions
The coaching relationship is reviewed at the end of each three month period and a decision is made about continuing the coaching. These sessions provide an opportunity for the client to give feedback to the coach and adjustments to be made to the frequency, style, focus or objectives. If it is agreed that the coaching relationship has come to an end then the session will focus on recapping the learning which has occurred during the coaching. Coaching relationships take time to deepen thus it is reasonable to expect the coaching relationship to last 9 months or longer.
Venue
The standard operating model for the coaching profession is telephone coaching, often the coach and client are in different countries with different time zones. Whilst telephone coaching is highly effective and convenient, often the coach / client relationship is deepened more quickly face-to-face, therefore we offer all Guernsey based clients the option of being coached at our offices. For non-Guernsey based clients an initial face-to-face session is recommended but not obligatory.
Fees
A typical coaching fee agreement will be based on a 2 hour initial design and discovery session and 6 hours of ongoing coaching per quarter. Fees are subject to VAT if coaching is delivered in the UK and are payable quarterly in advance. Where the coach travels off island to meet the client, out of pocket travel expenses are billed on a monthly basis as incurred.
